Joyful Oscar hopefuls

At least, that’s what we think these movies are. Three in particular.

These are the movies with the stellar casts, dramatic story lines and strategic release dates that make them contenders for the Academy Awards. Some are just blatantly gunning for it.

So, in this episode we watch some heavy breathing and intense acting in The Revenant, get excited about mops(?) in Joy, are sad while watching Freeheld and watch Christoph Waltz come full circle as the role he was born to play – a Bond Villain – in Spectre.

Things mentioned in this episode:

  • This some of the drama in filming The Revenant. Hey, maybe it will be worth crew members getting fired and naked people challenges.
  • Here is the story behind the movie Joy. Is this Oscar worthy? Is this even movie worthy?  Also forget mops, let’s be thankful that Joy Mangano invented HUGGABLE HANGERS!
  • And here’s the story of Laurel Anne Hester, a main character in Freeheld. Obvs SPOILERS. Kinda wish I had not read it.
  • Here is the full cast for Spectre. Gillian’s apologies for not remembering the names of Naomie Harris, Lea Seydoux and Ben Whishaw.

A very special episode — It came from Comic-Con 2015

In a very special episode we talk about the three (official) trailers that came out of Comic-Con!

We are MORE than cautiously optimistic about the future of Star Wars, try to understand the dynamic of the super villains in Suicide Squad and can’t pick a side in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. (JK, Jaclyn totally chooses Batman).

What else did we mention? Oh just all of this

Missing Jenny’s Brooklyn Wedding

In this episode we discover an awful aspect of Hollywood in An Open Secret, are stuck in a loveless Katherine Heigel rom-com in Jenny’s Wedding, watch lovely immigrants being in love in Brooklyn and are already crying at Beaches 2 aka Miss You Already.

Things we mentioned in this episode:

  • Nick Hornby has written such books as Fever Pitch, About A Boy and An Education — all pretty good movies!
  • Rooney Mara was originally cast as the lead role in Brooklyn before Saoirse Ronan. Interesting.
  • Director Amy Berg of An Open Secret also directed Deliver Us From Evil about abuse in the Catholic Church and West of Memphis that looks at the failure of justice in the case against the West Memphis Three. So, pretty good record.
  • Meryl Streep’s daughter in Jenny’s Wedding is Grace Gummer.
  • Yves Belanger did the cinematography for Brooklyn. Also did Wild and Dallas Buyers Club. Noice.

Secret wigs and sad smiles

movies
Hey there. New to the podcast? Great, here’s what we’re about.

We are here to review movies before they even happen!

Fortune tellers, soothsayers, just super intuitive — the point is we do some research and lean heavily on our own opinions in order to tell you what what movies may be worth your time based on the movie’s trailer.

So in this episode we watch America’s Sweetheart do some vigilante ass-kicking in Secret in their Eyes, keep a wig count while watching Steve Jobs, laugh at the super serious trials of Tig Notaro in Tig and remember a comedy giant in I am Chris Farley.

Things mentioned in the episode:

  • We did predict that Inside Out would be a success. Yep, we called that a Pixar movie would be good. Good call us.
  • Hank from Breaking Bad is probably better known as Dean Norris. Also, “the bad guy” from House of Cards aka Doug Stamper is Michael Kelly.
  • Michael Fassbender was snubbed for Shame. He’s probably being a baby but campaigning for an Oscar although it does seem like a pain in the ass.
  • Tig and a stool
